WOULD YOU COME WITH US IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO PREPARE THE LARGEST FLORAL TAPESTRY IN THE WORLD?
An unforgettable experience in the Rome countryside: Genazzano’s floral tapestry. Every year the townspeople decorate this beautiful medieval hamlet with a multitude of colorful flower petals to fill in original designs and drawings which literally carpet the town.
The tapestry is made to celebrate the devotion of the Sacred Heart, the week following Corpus Christi, and, in addition to the floral tapestry, the townspeople don costumes to represent Biblical people as they make a solemn procession through town. This important, religious and cultural event attracts faithful Catholics as well as tourists and visitors who come to admire the beauty of this local tradition.
The abundance of flower petals adorn the town for nearly two kilometers of length. In 2012 Genazzano entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest floral tapestry (www.youtube.com/watch?v=du3_
The annual, spontaneous collaboration of hundreds of townspeople and the success of this exquisite event has repeated itself for over one hundred years. During the weeks leading up to the event, groups of people gather fresh flowers from the scented hills of the Monti Prenestini. From each neighborhood of Genazzano, the elderly women with expert hands prepare the flowers and the petals which are then put into cool, tuff stone wine cellars as a form of preservation until the day of the event.
Saturday evening the drawings are made along the town’s neatly-swept cobblestone streets and during the night the drawings are filled in with petals and leaves, hence transforming the town into a delight for the eyes.
The religious procession of the Sacred Heart goes back to 1883 when Cardinal Vincenzo Vannutelli established the first celebrations with a solemn procession and published the statutes of the first association created in honor of the Sacred Heart.
Today, Genazzano’s floral tapestry has gained international fame and draws visitors from around the world who come each year to admire the splendid event.
Rome Countryside proposes…
During the night between Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6, the young and old alike work together to draw the designs on the cobblestone streets, prepare the base of the tapestry and then fill in the designs with flower petals and leaves. Our guests will have the opportunity to participate in the creation of the tapestry alongside the skilled townspeople. Each group of guests will be assigned to a specific neighborhood in Genazzano where they will contribute to make this traditional creation. The procession of townspeople will pass over the floral tapestry at 6:00pm on Sunday.
